Many new, larger monitors continue appearing on the Macintosh market, especially since the introduction of the Macintosh ][. Most of these monitors are much larger in size than the standard Mac’s built in screen—that is their advantage, but when using a larger screen, the menu bar appears smaller than it should and is very hard to read in most cases. What to do? Will you go cross–eyed from staring at the little menu bar?
About Big Menu
--------------
Of course not! Big Menu is a utility which allows you to choose from two larger font sizes for the menu bar. You simply install it once and forget about it, Big Menu will adjust the menu bar’s font size to the size you tell it to each time you start your Macintosh up. It couldn’t be any easier! And of course, you can also remove big menu if you wish (but why would you do a thing like that?).
Using Big Menu
--------------
To begin using Big Menu, simply choose Install Big Menu… from the FILE menu. You will be presented with a dialog box which allows you to specify the font size you would like to use for the menu bar. Choose the size you like and then click on the Install… button. A window will appear informing you that Big Menu is being installed, and if all goes well, a dialog box will soon appear telling you the installation was a success. To begin using Big Menu, just restart your Mac. That’s it!
When Big Menu installs itself, it creates a file and places it in your System Folder on the current Startup disk. If you throw this file out (it’s called “Big Menu”), Big Menu will no longer work and you will have to reinstall it if you wish to use it on that disk. Big Menu also installs larger sizes of the Chicago font into your System file—do not remove these fonts or Big Menu will not work properly.
Since Big Menu is only installed on the current Startup disk, you may wish to run it from several of your startup disks to install it on each one.
If you would like to remove Big Menu, simply choose Remove Big Menu… from the FILE menu and it will be removed from the current Startup disk (if it’s installed).
Miscellaneous
-------------
Included in Big Menu’s File menu is the command “Transfer”. This menu choice allows you to run another program immediately, rather than quitting to the Finder. After you choose this command, a dialog box will appear listing the applications on your disks. Simply click on an application’s name and then click on the Transfer button and you will be transfered to that application.
